Pack More Apples in Your Lunches for Better Health

By Tom Herrin

When we think about it, most of us who are a little bit older can probably remember a time when things we carried in our lunch had a much different look than those of today.  For one thing, there are all kinds of pre-packaged products that are available to take for lunches or snacks.  Many of them are fairly healthy, but many are full of everything except good nutrition.  The lunches from the past may have been much simpler.  Many of them had the traditional sandwich and a piece of fruit.  The most popular one may well have been an apple.  Part of this is because of the fact that they are so easy to store.  They can still be part of a healthy snack or meal today.

They Are Good for Digestive Health

Apples are a high fiber food.  This means that they contain materials that help to move food through the digestive system smoothly.  Avoiding constipation can mean better health in general.  The fiber in apples also helps to remove excess cholesterol from the veins and arteries.  Many people make a habit of eating apples daily due to the fact that apples seem to have some ability to help the friendly bacteria in the intestines to function properly.

They May Help with Weight Management

Because of the full feeling provided by the fiber in apples, people may feel more satisfied for a longer period of time.  The high water content of apples can help with that as well.  People often feel hungry due to actually needing more water.  Some studies have actually shown that apples may increase the metabolism, indicating that anything eaten after the apples may either burn off quickly or not be absorbed by the body.

They Really Are Good to Eat

If you haven’t eaten a fresh apple lately, you may have forgotten what you are missing.  Many of them are really sweet, having the ability to satisfy that sweet tooth.  Since they typically contain very few calories, they make a great snack.  I enjoy eating them in salads.   Eating apple slices with peanut butter, possibly mixed with honey and uncooked oatmeal, is pretty popular in my home.  Pick up some apples this week at the market.  Your family can have fun experimenting with them, and they will likely find new ways to enjoy this really healthy food.
