Better Walking Form May Mean Better Results

By Tom Herrin

Most people know that, in order to have success at what they do, they need to find ways to improve their technique.  This can range from performing some simple task to doing something that involves skill development such as playing some games or some form of athletics.  When they do something as basic as walking, they may assume that it comes so natural that all they need to do is get out there and start walking.  While this may be true in part, walking efficiently can be a little more than that.  For some, it can be as technical as a lot of other things.

Good Posture May Make a Walk Better

It is generally known that good posture is needed for sitting or standing, but many may not be aware that posture is also vitally important in walking.  A few of the things that should be considered are holding the body more upright to improve breathing and avoid soreness; keeping the head somewhat level; relaxing the shoulders; and looking about 20 feet ahead as they walk.  This can help them to maintain good focus.

Correct Arm Movement Can Be a Big Part

Moving the arms is critical for walking to be effective and efficient.  A look around at any animal that walks can make one think about just how integral each moving part is to another.  Many animals are seen with multiple parts moving each time they take a step.  For people, moving the arms as they walk is a vital part of the overall motion.  Keeping the arms somewhat close and avoiding flinging them can help.  The hands should be relaxed.  Getting arm movements in sync with leg and foot movement is another thing that can make walking work.

If It Feels Good, You Are More Likely to Do It

One of the key things for many people is to have some fun with whatever they take on.  Walking can be enjoyable if you let it be.  If you have good form, you will feel less tired and more likely to want to do more.  You also will probably have fewer aches.  Getting in shape can be fun, especially if you find a way to be more enthusiastic.  When we do things correctly, it can make all of the difference.  Walking for miles, and doing so for longer periods of time, is really what can make it a much more productive activity.
