Take Dietary Changes With (a Grain of) Salt
By Tom Herrin
When people have a desire to make a change in what they eat, many go for whatever is the going thing at the time. Sometimes this can be good, and sometimes it can steer them in the wrong direction. That direction may be toward some things that are counterproductive. No one needs to get off on the wrong track when they are trying to make progress. Taking two steps back when they are trying to go forward may undo many of the good things they are trying to accomplish. One of the latest trends is to cut carbohydrates from the diet. It can do some good things if done properly.
Leaving Some Carbs Alone May Help
When people are hungry, they may reach for something that is not so good. There are so many unhealthy snacks readily available that they won't have to look far to find them. Many of the ready-to-eat foods are packaged with a market in mind. Having foods that seem to have lots of flavor can mean more return customers. These foods that are high in sugar may be good for now, but they can catch up with people later. It has been suggested that women keep their consumption of carbs from sugar to 100 calories per day for women and 150 per day for men. It is a good goal to follow for those who are willing to read labels and follow guidelines.
Choosing the Right Kind Carbs May Help
People won't have to look far to find healthy carbs. Fruits, vegetables, and good grains have always been considered to be healthy. They can provide the kinds of carbs that fuel the body and support the muscles. If the body does not have enough carbs for fuel, it will begin to use the muscles as a source of energy. This can reduce the amount of lean muscle in the body.
Be a Good Consumer
As we make decisions about our health and well-being, we simply need to be informed. Making those good decisions can be the difference. I am a pretty big reader of labels. It helps me to be more aware of what I am buying and eating. It can make a difference in overall health and give me what I need to keep my body working. We can all do better if we just do our best to stay informed.
