Colorful Meals May Mean Healthy

By Tom Herrin

Every time people sit down to meals, they are entitled to have the healthiest plate possible.  Some prefer that, but others remain a little stuck on a few things that have become their favorites.  It may not even be because they actually taste all that good, but it may be a matter of habit.  Those who don't much care for change tend to feel better with more of the same.  In some ways, about everyone does it to some extent.  If someone wants to make meals healthier without doing a lot of research, making certain they contain more color can be a simple way of doing that.  For the most part, the bigger the variety of colors, the healthier the meal.

Reds May Be Bold

Foods that are some kind of red in color often have some good properties.  Some of them are believed to be good for the heart and skin.  Some also may help protect against some kinds of diabetes.  These foods may not always find their way to a plate, so it may require some reminding.  Whether as a part of a dish, salad, or dessert, they can really brighten up a meal.  A few on this list are tomatoes, strawberries, red peppers, beets, watermelons and plenty of other good choices.

Blues Have Made a Name for Themselves

In recent years, it seems that foods that are blue, or purple, have become more popular.  They have been recognized for some of their particular abilities to help preserve health.  They are thought to help fight free radicals, fight inflammation, and cut the risk of Alzheimer's.  The foods are pretty tasty and have gained quite a bit of popularity in recent years.  A few of them are blueberries, plums, purple cabbage, figs, prunes, and several others.

Be Adventuresome

All it takes for us to make those meals healthier is to be a little creative.  We like to see how much we can add to meals to make them more colorful.  Each of our members can take turns picking the colors of the day.  It can be an enjoyable experience.  When we take a look at the end result, we may find that we have introduced ourselves to some great new foods, some of which we may have never thought of trying before.  For an easy way to boost the healthiness of your meals, take the color challenge.
