Avoid Being Part of the Problem With Injuries

By Tom Herrin

When anyone decides to do something about their perceived physical issues, they often do so by getting into a new, or more intense, workout routine.  Most people could use more than what they currently do, but they need to do it wisely.  Those who are the most successful are likely those who manage to stay in touch with their own needs.  While this may sound complicated, it isn't too much so.  Working to keep a good communication with the body is a good way to be successful without risking injuries that can be avoided.  It is a big part of a learning process that should be ongoing for everyone.

Warming up Is More Than Just Filling Time

A lot of people seem to consider warming up as simply something to do to take up a few minutes of time.  In fact, warming up properly may be the most critical part of the exercise.  If it is not done right, it may be counterproductive.  For it to work best, it should possibly be considered a part of the exercise itself.  It can allow an increase in blood flow to all parts of the body.  At the same time, a proper cooling down is important to help the body to return to a more normal operating level.  This can help the heart to slow as it should.  Stopping the activity too fast may result in problems.

Don't Try to Start at the Top

For those who want to increase strength, it is wise to begin with a level at which they are comfortable without causing excess strain.  Starting out by lifting a large amount of weight is only going to be frustrating.  Using an amount within their comfort zone can allow the muscles to make slow and steady progress.  Increasing weights slowly over time will yield much better progress without risking injury.  These kinds of injuries will only set people back.  It may even cause them to have to start over.  This is never encouraging.

Stay Informed

It is a good idea for all of us to educate ourselves about the best exercises as well as exactly what we want to accomplish.  I enjoy working out but find myself occasionally starting over or making alterations.  If I do this with my goal in mind, it seems to work for me.  It is always great to get the feel of what it takes for me to do the most for my body.  It isn't that difficult, but it does require being more in tune.  The last thing I want is an injury to set me back and cost me time.
