Individual Differences May Keep Some of Us Awake

By Tom Herrin

There is much to be said about personalizing anything.  For some of us, it may include our schedules.  Those of us who rise early, ready to meet the day, may feel that their lifestyle is the norm, and all others are something out of the ordinary.  That is not at all the case as many of us operate much better on a late schedule.  In some instances, it may be choice, or habit, but it is often a matter of the way our given internal clocks are programmed.  Getting up later and going to be much later works for lots of people.  Trying to force them to change this can be a miserable failure, and such people may become considerably less efficient in the work and anything else they do.

For Many, Night Time Is the Right Time

Those of us who function best in later hours are no less competent than anyone else.  Beginning the day later and going strong well into the evening is the most productive way for some.  I am one of those, and I generally get much more done when I start around the middle of the day.  In this case, I can usually go until midnight or later.  If I ride my bicycle, or exercise, I do best beginning at 5 or so in the afternoon.  For a long time, I rode my bicycle for an hour every evening when I got home.  That was around 9 or 10.  It worked great for me, and I was able to sleep well.

The Day Shift

Those whose internal clocks run during the day are generally energized early.  They may get up with the proverbial chickens and start to wind down before dinner.  If it works for them, great.  When we may have some difficulties, it may be when the two types must mesh their schedules.  My wife always operates better early while I do much better later.  We make it work, but we have to find ways to compromise.

Meeting in the Middle

As for trying to get schedules a little more together, we may be able yo make it work by adjusting our alarms a few minutes at a time over a few days or weeks.  We are less likely to experience the trauma of abrupt change and make a smoother transition.  It may make all of us a little happier and allow day and night to meet.
