Why You Should Aspire to Camp More in the New Year

By Brandi Swieter

Camping is a favorite summer pastime of many for the simple notion of getting away for awhile. Many people enjoy being in nature and getting away from the stresses of life at home. While this is reason enough to go, there are actually more health benefits than one might realize to make the pastime truly worthwhile. In the new year, more people should aspire to camp, and more often than just the summertime.

Improved Sleep

Life’s stresses often play a role in the way we sleep. When to-do lists are on people’s minds, many find it difficult to get any rest. Artificial light also interferes, as the body stays more alert and awake with the lights of smartphone screens and devices constantly on. People experience improved sleep when in the wilderness as the sun’s shine is what people wake to each morning. They can fall asleep faster and wake up easier while camping.

Less Screen Time

While many campgrounds have added Wi-Fi to their list of amenities, screen time is often experienced far less while camping. People may still check their phones for messages and calls, but many spend far more time enjoying their time away and tend to remain unplugged far more than usual. Not only will this improve sleep, but it will give people the opportunity to unwind and get away from it all while enjoying time alone or with the friends or family who came along on the trip.

Improved Mood

Being outdoors is one way to improve a person’s mood. Even without camping, all a person has to do is take a walk outside and they can eliminate some of their symptoms of depression. Being outside for several days in a row while on a camping trip is a great way to get rid of negative thoughts and feelings and see the beauty in life around us. It’s easier to clear the mind and gain clarity outside than it is anywhere else.

Camping doesn’t have to be left to the summer months. People can find campgrounds with cabins that allow them to camp all-year round. Those who prefer a tent can even go during the fall and spring months as well. While the weather may not be as nice, just a few precautions will help make the experience all the same. With a tarp underneath and above the tent to protect from wetness, and sleeping bags that keep warm even in cold temperatures, anyone can gain the benefits of camping any time of year.
