Promoting Fitness with Fall and Winter Activities

<

By Brandi Swieter

The fall and winter seasons tend to see a decrease in fitness activities. With fall shows starting up and people back to their normal school and work routines, combined with the business of the holidays, there often isn't a lot of time for extra exercise. Making time and getting a good workout in is made easier by choosing fun fall and winter activities that promote fitness. Plenty exist to try.

Trip to the Zoo

Most people take a walk through a local park to enjoy the scene of changing leaves. Though this is a great pastime for autumn, a walk through the zoo is also possible. Most people would think that a zoo trip is meant for the summer months, but zoos remain open throughout the fall months as well. The bonus is that the prices tend to be discounted during this time. The Indianapolis Zoo has special offerings throughout the year, such as ZooBoo around Halloween time, Power Recycling Day in November, and Christmas at the Zoo at the end of November and into December.

Visit an Orchard

An orchard offers a chance to get some exercise in through walking as well. Adrian Orchards in Indianapolis remains open until January, providing plenty of time to get out and about throughout the fall and part of winter. Explore the scenery, walk the grounds, pick some apples, and visit the store to see what they have to offer.

Make Outdoor Chores a Family Affair

Outdoor chores are plentiful throughout the cold seasons. Raking leaves in the fall and shoveling snow in the winter provides good exercise if people are doing it right. By making it a family affair and having everyone help out, it can make it more fun while also getting the job done quickly. The tasks can even be made into a game for a more enjoyable experience.

Maintaining fitness through the fall and winter months is important for overall health. It's easy to get out of the habit of exercising when food and treats are at the center of many of the holidays during these seasons, but finding time for some sort of exercise will help burn those extra calories. Plenty of fun activities exist that make it seem like it isn't even exercise at all.
