5 Methods for Easing Asthma
By Brandi Goodman
People with asthma already have a difficult time breathing. This is especially true when they overexert themselves. Easing asthma symptoms is possible, though, as long as you know how. A few options exist for easing your asthma and making your breathing easier to manage.
Avoid Triggers
Most sufferers have a particular trigger, or perhaps a few of them, that make their asthma flare up. It is important to avoid these triggers so the problem doesn't persist. If you find yourself needing your inhaler after smoking, for example, then obviously the activity is not for you.
Keep a Clean Home
A home filled with dust and debris can be a problem for those with respiratory illnesses. Keeping a clean home is one way to avoid this. It's important to spend at least one day a week getting things clean so the dust does not get out of control. You should wear a mask while you clean to ensure any dust particles do not disturb you.
Exercise Regularly
You may have a hard time with your asthma if you're running or performing cardio, but not all exercise will leave you winded. Exercising regularly is actually beneficial to those with asthma as it can improve your lung function and build up your capacity. Swimming is often a great option because it doesn't cause you to overexert yourself while still acting as a form of cardio.
Buy Dustproof Covers and Washable Curtains
Bedding, mattresses, pillowcases, and more can trap dust easily. Buy dustproof covers for each of these items in your home so you can prevent dust from interfering with your airways. It is also advisable to purchase washable curtains. Dust accumulates in the creases of curtains and stays in place if it isn't cleaned. You'll breathe this in regularly. Getting washable curtains ensures you can wash them often to free the material from collected dust and breathe easier in your home.
Bathe Your Pet Often
Pet dander is a common problem for people with asthma. Instead of avoiding having a pet altogether, just make sure you keep it bathed. Groom the fur and keep your pets clean and well-maintained so you do not have another irritant to cause problems.
Prevention methods such as these allow people a better chance at keeping asthma symptoms at bay. You may find yourself using your inhaler less and having an easier time breathing on average. Try one or more of these methods to reduce your symptoms and ease your asthma or other breathing troubles.
