Enjoy September Food Observances the Healthy Way

By Brandi Goodman

Each month sees a slew of food observances celebrated. September has numerous occasions to consider. When you're observing these days, however, you should be sure to enjoy them in a healthy way and not exactly as the day describes. A few changes are all it takes to help make the meal you're eating more nutritious and valuable to your health.

National Cheeseburger Day

The 18th of September marks National Cheeseburger Day. Don't just run to the nearest fast food place and grab a burger. The calories, carbs, and sodium you'll consume are not great for your overall health. If you want to enjoy a burger, create a homemade version. Buy hamburger meat that is low in fat and won't have as much grease coming off it. You should also opt for a whole wheat bun rather than white. Add mozzarella cheese if any, and be sure to skip the condiments and add veggies.

National Quesadilla Day

Quesadillas typically consist of at least a tortilla and some cheese. Others may include a meat, such as chicken, and might even add in some vegetables. On the 25th of September for National Quesadilla Day, make sure you're skipping the Taco Bell line and creating your own version at home. Use whole-wheat tortillas and go light on the cheese. Make sure to include a lean meat, such as chicken or turkey, and add in all the veggies you desire.

Better Breakfast Month

The entire month of September has been deemed Better Breakfast Month. The whole point of this observance is to learn how to make a better breakfast that is healthier for your brain and body. You don't want to eat a bowl of sugary cereal or a Pop-Tart on the go. Instead, you should be making meals high in protein and fiber that will keep you satisfied for hours. Some eggs, whole-wheat toast, and a piece of fruit may work well. You could also add fruit to some Greek yogurt, and add some homemade sweet potato fries on the side.

National Chicken Month

Chicken is a popular dish. It's also on the lean side when it comes to meat options, making it ideal to eat regularly. However, stopping at your local chicken restaurant to grab a bucket of fried chicken is not the intended plan. You should be baking your chicken at home for a healthier alternative. Grilled chicken is also a good option. Don't fry it in a pan of oil. Make sure you're sticking with a piece roughly the size of your palm, and adding a fruit, veggie, and whole grain to your plate as well for a complete, nutritious meal.

Celebrate whichever food observance you want during September and any month thereafter. Just be sure to change up a few ingredients or consume less of it to make the meal or treat more worthwhile for your well-being.
