Here's Why Sleep Deprivation is Bad for Your Health

By Genevieve Cunningham

As a society, we're all a little too used to a lack of sleep. It's like we're all running on empty, and we all know it. Unfortunately, there are very few attempts being made to turn this trend around. It's as though we're expected to get very little sleep, and yet we're still expected to perform at our best. But a lack of sleep is so hard on our bodies, and it affects so much more than our performance. If you're guilty of missing sleep, take a look at these reasons why sleep deprivation needs to be turned around starting now.

It Kills Focus

We need focus for so much. We need it for school. We need it for work. We even need it for driving. But when we don't get enough sleep, we lose so much of that ability to pay attention. If you need to get your focus back, you have to improve your sleep, or a little bit of that focus will always stay gone.

It Affects Your Moods

Irritability is a well known side effect of a lack of sleep. We wake up grumpy, can't deal with people, and feel generally negative about life. And living a life feeling irritable is not fun! If you want more stable moods, there are a lot of steps that can be taken, but improving your sleep every night should be the first step. You may find that it's the only step you need.

It Weakens the Immune System

On a more physical level, a lack of sleep can weaken your immune system. And when your immune system is weak, you're more likely to get sick. You'll have a hard time shaking that cold. You'll be more susceptible to the flu. But if you focus on improving your sleep, your immune system may be boosted, and illness may not be such a struggle in your everyday life.

It Feels Bad

A lack of sleep feels bad. It makes us sore and tired and worn down. Isn't that reason enough to get more sleep? It should be! Don't let yourself feel bad. Make some changes to your bedtime routine, and enjoy the way it makes your body and mind feel moving forward.

If you're not getting enough sleep, it's time to change your ways. Sleep matters -- for your health, your mind, and your life in general. Go to bed early, turn off the lights, get comfortable, and get the sleep you need to feel positive and live a healthy life every day.
