Why Working Out is Essential to Good Health
By Genevieve Cunningham
If you want to be healthy, you already know you need to exercise. Unfortunately, a lot of people skip this very important step. We think we can get away without it. We think it's not as important as the fitness experts tell us. We think we don't have the time or money or energy. We put exercise on the back-burner because it's just not important. But for good health, exercise is an absolute essential. We need it, and when we avoid it, we're ignoring our body's basic needs. If you're still guilty of skipping out on basic exercise, take a look at why working out is an essential need in your quest for better health.
It Promotes Weight Management
Our weight plays a huge role in the way we feel and our overall health. Extra weight leads to a heightened risk of major diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. Those who fall into the obese category for body fat percentage also tend to have higher blood pressure and unstable blood sugar. But exercise -- especially when it's done consistently -- can help us manage our weight and keep weight gain to a minimum. Sure, we all want to look good, but the literal health benefits of a desirable weight are much more important to overall well-being.
It Builds Strength and Balance
Unless you're purposely trying to increase muscle size, you may not give a lot of thought to building strength. But strength is needed in everyday activities. It's needed to lift children and clean house and work. It's needed to carry our own bodies around. And working out can help us build lasting strength. Along with strength, it can also help us maintain good balance. Balance tends to naturally wane as we age, but with regular exercise, we can help stop the decline and keep our bodies healthier and stronger moving forward.
It Promotes Activity
Activity is about more than just exercise. It's about being engaged and involved in life. It's about going to activities and being with family and friends. When we exercise, we keep our bodies comfortable with activity. We have less pain and more flexibility. If you want to live an active life -- which is usually a healthier and happier life as well -- maintaining an exercise routine is key.
If you're not currently taking the time to work out, you should consider adding it into your normal routine. We need exercise. We need movement. We need it for physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Choose an exercise program that you enjoy, get moving, and enjoy the big benefits it brings into your life.
