How to Save Energy During Your Workout

By Genevieve Cunningham

Exercise is hard work. It takes a lot of energy to maintain a regular routine, and if you're working to make any significant changes in your health or body, it requires even more of your energy reserves. Unfortunately, this can make us feel tired and overwhelmed. So what can we do about it? We can be smart about our workouts -- which means saving energy even as we exercise. If you need help saving energy during your workouts, take a look at these tips to help you get moving in the right direction with today's exercise routine.

Fuel Your Body

If you want to save energy, you first have to give your body the right energy. And the only way to give your body the right energy is to fuel it with healthy foods. Your diet should consist of vegetables, some fruits, and lean proteins. You'll also know plenty of water. By giving your body what it needs, you'll be setting yourself up for more efficient workouts and more energy as a whole.

Take Adequate Breaks

If you want to reserve energy during your workouts, you should make plenty of time for breaks. Taking breaks allows you to catch your breath, let your muscles rest, and recuperate a little bit of energy. Everyone will need a different amount of breaks and for different lengths. Determine what works for you, work it into your routine, and you can save a ton of energy to use both during your workout and after.

Know Your Limits

Everyone's body is different, which is why it's really important to know your own limits This is especially helpful if you're following a class or working out with a partner. Just because someone else can keep going, it doesn't mean that we should. Likewise, just because someone else takes a break, it doesn't necessarily mean that we have to. We should know how hard to push our bodies, when to take breaks, and when to take the intensity down a notch. This can prevent injury, escape burnout, and preserve energy each time we work out.

Workouts should be hard. They should be challenging. They should make you feel like you've expended energy! But they shouldn't zap you of all your energy. It's entirely possible to work out and still save energy for the rest of your day. Use these tips to make your workout as effective as possible, and save some energy for every other part of your life too.
