Ways to Purify the Air in Your Home

By Emily Lindholm

Whether you work at home or travel often, you can make your home your own personal fortress.  No matter where you live and what your lifestyle looks like, your home can be the safe place that makes you feel like a king or queen.  I recommend starting by looking at the air quality in your home.  How can we create a home with the purest air?

Create your home as a place where you can breathe deep and relax, without any added toxins in the air.   Between the particles that circulate throughout the air ducts and the chemicals that come from many household cleaners, it is easy for homes to accumulate toxins in the air.  Here are some ways to keep these toxins away and keep the air inside of your home pure and toxin-free.

Plants

One of the easiest solutions to creating clean air in the home is brought to us by mother nature.  Plants help to remove harmful chemicals in the home by naturally filtering the air.  You can never have too many plants in the home.  If you're someone who typically forgets to water your plants, try a plant called mother-in-law's tongue.  This hardy succulent can survive with low light and needs very little water.   Some other varieties of plants that are best for sustaining the air quality in the home include, English ivy, peace lilies, spider plants, and dragon trees.

Natural Cleaners

Most household cleaners on the market have chemicals in them, and these chemicals in particular can disrupt the endocrine system.  Try using natural cleaning products.  Better yet, make your own!  Certain essential oils are great for cleaning.  Recipes can be found all over the internet for DIY cleaning solutions.  My favorite is the simple combination of baking soda and lemon essential oil.  I use it to clean the bathroom and kitchen sinks.

Air Purifiers

To ensure that you are breathing clean air, you may shop around for a high-quality air purifier.  Air purifiers will filter things like bacteria, dust, and pollen.  Look for air purifiers that filter mold spores as well.  Mold can grow easily in the home in places that we cannot see.

Also, make sure that the air filter in your home is getting changed regularly.  Try getting a new HEPA filter every season to ensure quality air in the home.

Making every effort you can to purify the air in the home will help benefit your health and the ones you love.  One of the major benefits you may see once you purify the air in your home is improved sleep.  Breathing clean air while you sleep may provide the benefit of waking up feeling more rested and fresh.  You may also discover that allergies improve, and it may help to support the immune system, as the body will have less to fight off.

Start by following this guide, even if you begin just by the addition of a plant or two.  Look at different air purifiers, check your filter, and upgrade any household products that may not support a toxin-free home.  Make your home your fortress, and take your deepest breaths with ease and less worry about harmful chemicals.
