The Surprising Power of Laughter

By Sandy Schroeder

How long has it been since you laughed, or just giggled a little? That seems like a silly question. We all smirk over quirky stuff in the news or shake our heads and smile when the dog falls all over himself, but what about rumbling laughs that come from deep inside and make the eyes water.

That kind of laughter can make everything a little better, as it relaxes the body, cleanses the soul and promises more good things to come. If you are a born optimist, you may already know the value of humor, and use it whenever you can to bond with others and enrich your life.

When my kids were growing up, one of my boys always knew how to defuse an argument. He would roll his eyes and make some inane comment that we all recognized and we would all burst into laughter. That same kid created a very formal sounding phone message that ask the caller to please leave his shoe size, current weight, social security number, etc., etc. His sense of the ridiculous kept us all laughing and eliminated a lot of squabbles.

Right now with such a complex diet of real issues, many of us just forget to laugh. There are still funny things happening all around us, but we just fail to look for them.

What Laughter Can Do

Every individual and family is different, but the need for humor is universal.  Here are a few ways to open the door to laughter.

Already into yoga? - Find out what laughter yoga is all about and try it.

Need to break the ice - As we face new work, school, community situations, a quick smile or a shared joke can go a long way to relax everyone.

Still wound up at the end of the day - Whip out your favorite old movie and pass the popcorn as you share the laughs with family and friends.

Look for the funny side - Cultivate your talent for spotting ironies, contradictions, and genuinely funny situations.

Start collecting humor - If you enjoy humor and want your kids to learn how magical it can be, look for joke books, online funny channels and quirky shows to share. Pick the level that fits and avoid the unacceptable, totally negative or crude commentary that tries to pass for humor.

We are all different, but everyone can benefit mentally and physically from a dash of humor.
