3 Ways to Refocus Your Attention on Fitness

By Genevieve Cunningham

When it comes to fitness, finding and losing motivation is normal. Sometimes we feel really inspired. We hit the gym hard, work with all our effort and focus, and give it everything we have. And then other times, we just don’t have that extra energy. While this generally isn’t a problem, it can become an obstacle very quickly when we lose motivation and can’t seem to find it again. So what do we do when this happens? If you’re interested in gaining back some of that motivation, take a look at these tips.

Find New Goals

Most people start out their fitness journey with a specific goal. Maybe it’s to lose weight. Maybe it’s to fit into a certain outfit. Maybe it’s to improve numbers at your next doctor’s visit. After a while, and especially if you reach the initial goal, the motivation to keep working out wears off. If you’ve hit a slump, find a new goal. The more personal, the better. Search your mind and find something that really gets you pumped. Sometimes setting a new goal to work toward is all it takes to get your focus back.

Join a New Program

It’s possible that you can’t find any motivation because you’re bored. Is your workout always the same? Do you ever try anything new? If not, it might be a good idea to try something you’ve never tried before. Dedicate yourself to a brand new program. This will challenge both the body and mind, and it may help you find a new, enhanced focus to keep you going.

Take a Deliberate Break

If you’re really having a hard time getting your attention on exercise, maybe you should take a break. But don’t just stop … make a plan. Make the break deliberate. Stop exercising for one week or two weeks or some amount of time that works for you. Once that time has passed, jump back into your workout with full force. While this approach doesn’t work for everyone, many find that allowing their brains and bodies to rest is all it takes to regain focus and motivation.

Losing motivation and focus definitely happens. And most of the time, it’s truly not the end of the world. But if you’re ready to find your focus again, use these tips to get started. Once you get your attention back where it belongs, you’ll be moving toward better health and a fit body to last a lifetime.
