Exercise in Cold Temps Burns More Fat

By Sandy Schroeder

Winter always makes me think of hot cocoa by the fire with warm socks and a good book. I venture out only when I have to, but now I have another reason to be out there.

Drs. Mehmet Oz and Michael Roizen tell us exercise in cold temperatures burns more fat. The research study focused on moderately fit, overweight people, ages 18 to 30. One group did high intensity exercise in 32-degree temperatures. The other did the same in 70 degree temperatures.

Look at the Difference

The group exercising in the cold burned 358 percent more fat than those who worked out at room temperatures. That means you could burn as much fat in 30 minutes on a cold February day as you would in 90 minutes on a mild April day. You could be done with exercise for the day before you even got going when the temperatures were warm.

Think about the pounds you would like to drop and how you could make outdoor exercise happen. Those numbers make me want to do a lot of early morning walks to the park in place of longer sessions on the mat in the evening. If you agree, make sure you wear warm layered clothing and check with your doctor if you have any health restrictions.

Extra Benefits

At the same time, as you lap up all of those weight loss benefits, you could be enjoying other healthy advantages.

Savor a big dose of nature - Spend time with your whole family walking, skating, or skiing. Pick new spots and make it a day outside.

Lift your spirits - Moving outside in fresh cold air could be just what you need to flip the switch on boredom or sadness. Breaking away from your computer, and heading out for an hour playing in the snow with your kids could make everybody happier. Winter walks and runs could be addictive.

Get an exercise boost - If you have been spending all of your exercise time on the treadmill in front of the TV, it may be time to pick up speed with a new winter sport.

Sleep may be automatic - You may sleep like a rock after a day playing in the snow. Exercise has been proven to improve sleep, and now you will be kicking it up another notch.

However you feel about winter, and whatever pounds you might like to lose, burning more calories faster is hard to beat.
