Taking a Vacation Won't Hurt You; Quite the Opposite

By Tom Herrin

The times when people chose to forego a yearly vacation afforded by their employers may have seen its better days.  It has almost become the American way that so many people feel as if they need to get ahead in their careers by passing on a full vacation.  It is often believed that Americans work excessive amounts of hours in order to pursue the golden calf. While it may have once been a way to provide extra benefits for their families, the idea has begun to take its toll on people in general.  It is now better known that taking that vacation may do far more for health than may ever be obtained by skipping, or skimping, on it.

They May Keep a Healthier Heart

People who stay busy and spend considerable time in trying jobs often place strain on their hearts.  A vacation can be a great way to step away from all of that. It is well known that those who take vacations can spare their hearts.  One study showed that women who skipped vacations were far more likely to have cardiac problems than those who took one or two a year.  In another study, men who took regular vacations were 32 percent less likely to die of a heart attack and 21 percent less likely to die of anything other than age-related issues.

They Can Be Good for Mental Health

A vacation can clear the mind and remove restrictions.  In other words, it can help people have a more positive outlook and avoid many of the thoughts that may create a negative outlook.  They may help people to get better sleep as well. These things can combine to make people more mentally alert and be a safer employee.

They Can Restart Relationships

Let’s face it, most of us tend to let our connections with others backslide from time to time.  A vacation can offer a great opportunity for families to improve the bond they have. Spending time together can open communication and empathy.  For kids, seeing their parents in a different light can make them seem more trustworthy and understanding. If you are one of those who has been putting off vacations to get ahead, stop doing it.  Take a vacation with your family, even if it is only a few days at some simple getaway. It could pay off in better health physically, mentally, and emotionally.
