Can the Right Temperature Support Health?

By Tom Herrin

When people are trying to do something to improve their health, they may be willing to do a little more than usual to make some good changes.  While there are times in which such changes can be quite challenging, there may be some things you can do that are much simpler.  It is often the small changes that can make the greatest difference.  For those who are more mathematically inclined, it may be said that these activities have a higher rate of return.  One of those changes that may be relatively minor is controlling temperature.  A few degrees may have a large impact in terms of results.

Sleep Cooler, Sleep Better

There are all kinds of preferences when it comes to sleep temperatures.  Some may want it to be really warm, but many others choose cooler temps.  In studies, it has been observed that there may actually be an ideal temperature range for sleeping.  That is thought to be from 65-72 degrees.  Apparently this may help individuals to experience full sleep cycles.  It is believed that when temperatures are too warm, it may have a negative effect on Rapid Eye Movement.

Weight Loss Efforts May Be More Successful

Anytime someone wants to lose weight, it is best if they have as many things as possible in their favor.  It can be a struggle for anyone.  It has been observed by some who have done studies that temperature can have a pretty significant effect on this.  They have narrowed down the prime range for this to 64-67 degrees.  For those who are even more daring, it is believed that shivering can increase the rate at which people burn calories as much as five times.  This is not saying that they should remain in the cold for long periods of time, but it may not be so bad for some short periods.

Look for Balance

When we consider playing with something such as temperature, we obviously need to think about what works for us.  I have had problems with sleep, so I usually turn the thermostat down each night before I go to bed.  It seems to help me to fall asleep and stay asleep.  While most of us also watch our electric bills, we may find that we can achieve what we need by adjusting the thermostat at the right times and still afford it.
