Carpal Tunnel? Talk to Your Chiropractor
By Sara Butler
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a fairly common problem that occurs when the large nerve running through the wrist, the median nerve, becomes pinched. This happens often due to the fact that there is so little space for the nerve to run through and if there’s any swelling, it can cause pain and discomfort in the area. If you suspect you have carpal tunnel, you should discuss it with your chiropractor. Here are three reasons why.
It Might Be Something Else
In the age of the internet, everyone can consult Dr. Google if they have a problem, but that doesn’t mean you should take his word for it. If you’re not a medical professional, then you might have a hard time telling the difference between the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome and other problems that are similar. It’s always best to get a professional diagnosis so that you can begin a treatment plan for the correct issue in order to resolve it.
Chiropractors Customize a Treatment Plan
You may read about a treatment on the internet for carpal tunnel and give it try, but it may end up making the problem worse. The advantage of being treated by a medical professional such as your chiropractor is that they will tailor a treatment plan just for you and monitor it. If something isn’t working, or aggravating the problem further, then you can change the treatment plan to find something that does work and help to ease your pain and discomfort. That’s not something someone who is self-prescribing a treatment may know how to do.
There May Be Something More Serious Going On
There is a genetic component to carpal tunnel syndrome, so if someone in your family has it then you’re more likely to develop it too. But you can also inadvertently increase the odds of developing the syndrome through things that are no fault of your own, such as being pregnant. Also, diabetics may have problems with their nerves they mistake as carpal tunnel syndrome when it’s really a symptom of something much more serious. Make sure you go to your chiropractor to get properly diagnosed so they can diagnose the underlying cause of it, if one exists, and make sure you get the right treatment.
