Self-Care Tips for This Winter

By Sara Butler

Stress this time of the year is the name of the game. You've just survived one year and tumbled into the next on a wave of sugar and holiday partying that has probably left you feeling a bit blah -- and the weather outside doesn't help. Here are a few tips you can use to help you glide through this winter feeling great knowing that you're caring for yourself first.

Check in Periodically

You're probably used to checking in with everyone in your life -- your partner, your kids, your parents. But when was the last time you checked in on yourself?

It's really easy to get caught up in the motions of daily life and forget about you, which is why a daily check in with yourself is essential to your health and wellness. Every morning think about what you need for that day. It might be something simple like a cup of coffee or a morning walk, but it's important to ask yourself this question each day to ensure you're getting just a little of what you need to help you control the stress in your busy life.

Share

You have friends and family in your life to help shoulder your mental burden, so make sure to take advantage of it! Life can be pretty fast-paced and it may feel as if you always have something to do. But don't ignore your feeling in the process. Instead, share with your family and friends how you're feeling whether it's happy, exhausted, or overwhelmed. If you feel as if too much is being put on your shoulders, then ask for help. That's what the people in your life are there for.

Exercise

Exercise can be a great stress reliever and help you to give you more energy, too. Plus, endorphins can do some really great things for your mood, so if you notice you're starting to become stressed, then turn to exercise to help you cope. Getting your blood pumping can do a lot more for you than simply make you sweat.

Do Something You Enjoy

You cannot go through life and be happy without doing something you know you'll enjoy the process. Make plans with people in your life that make you happy or take a painting or cooking class. Even simply sitting down on the couch as you apply a face mask and watch a movie you love can help you feel renewed.
