Mosquito Bite Prevention Tips

By Lana Bandoim

They are small, loud, annoying and dangerous. They love to feast on people’s blood and can spread diseases. They can ruin anyone’s night out or early morning run. Who are these horrible pests? They are mosquitoes, and you want to avoid their bites by following these prevention tips.

Avoid Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes tend to be the most active during dusk or early evening hours. However, some species are more active in the early morning. Try to avoid going outside during the most active periods for mosquitoes.

Control Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes need water to breed, so it is important to remove sources of standing water around your home and yard. Get rid of items that collect water and are not necessary. Clean out birdbaths and planters every week to remove standing water. Consider using larvacides that can prevent mosquitoes from breeding.

In addition, you can trim excess vegetation in the yard that attracts mosquitoes. Keep the grass and other plants short. Remove weeds and other things that provide mosquitoes with protection.

Keep Mosquitoes Out

When a mosquito enters your home, it can be an annoying challenge to find and remove it. Make sure the screens on windows and doors do not have holes or gaps. Replace old screens that can allow mosquitoes inside. Try to avoid opening doors and windows without screens, so mosquitoes and other insects cannot enter.

Mosquitoes prefer dark and humid areas to hide. After they enter the home, they may hide in your laundry room, closets or under sinks. Check these parts of the home and consider using insecticides to get rid of them. You may have to reapply the insecticides several times for them to work.

Use Repellants

Insect repellents may help you avoid mosquito bites. Before applying a repellant, make sure it is on the approved list from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Carefully read the ingredient list and pay attention to the type of active ingredients. DEET and picaridin are common active ingredients in insect repellants.

Read and follow the instructions on the repellant bottle. They may be different for each brand or type of product. Avoid applying repellant to open cuts or wounds. Make sure they are covered before spraying. It is recommended that you put on sunblock before using repellants.

Mosquitoes can be annoying and dangerous. Their bites can carry diseases, so it is important to avoid them. Try these tips and enjoy an itch-free summer.
