Avoid Falling Ill This Fall With Some Healthy Tips
By Brandi Swieter
The autumn months seem fun and festive for many as families get to enjoy fall activities such as apple picking and going on hayrides. This time of year can prove dangerous, however, as many more people start to get sick with the changing weather. Avoid falling ill this fall by following a few tips and learning what to do -- or not to do -- during this season.
Get an Immune System Boost
The immune system tends to take a big hit during the fall and winter seasons. It becomes much easier to get sick during these months. Get an immune system boost by taking vitamins, drinking plenty of water, getting enough rest, and consuming the most nutritious foods you can. Fresh fruits and vegetables help tremendously during cold weather.
Prepare for Daylight Savings Time
Daylight Savings Time happens every fall, usually around the beginning of November. Start preparing for the time change early by going to bed at least an hour earlier each night. Longer nights of darkness mean the body will need more sleep to adjust. It’s best to follow this same tip during the spring forward change as well. It is best if people give themselves one full week of extra sleep prior to the time change, although those who have an especially hard time adjusting may take longer.
Get the Flu Vaccine
The flu hits people hard during cold weather months. Prepare by getting the flu vaccine early, such as in the early fall months, rather than waiting until it’s too late. Individuals should do their best to schedule an appointment with their doctors or get seen at a local pharmacy that offers the shot, before the end of October. Doing so will ensure the dose has time to kick in before the flu season starts.
Wash Hands Regularly
Also part of keeping the immune system up, washing hands regularly is highly necessary. Other people who are already sick may touch something, spreading their germs to others who touch the same item. Just imagine how many people have handled a doorknob. Keepings the hands washed decreases the likelihood that a person will get those germs and develop an illness afterward.
Another part of staying healthy during the fall season may be getting an adjustment at the chiropractor. Visit The Joint Chiropractic during its extended hours to eliminate aches in the body and prepare for the many fall activities that are sure to occur this autumn. It’s hard to take the kids trick-or-treating with an aching back.
