4 Ways to Add Fitness to the Holiday Season

By Brandi Swieter

Many people spend their holidays attending parties, shopping for the right gifts, wrapping presents, and driving to and from the many shops, stores, and homes they have to visit. With so much running around to do and activities to finish, it leaves little time for fitness. With a few fun ways, anyone can add fitness to their holiday season to help them stay in shape.

Take a Hike

Schedule a day on the calendar for the family to all go on a hike together. It gets everyone outside to enjoy some fresh air, ensures quality time together, and provides a level of fitness that will keep the body working well. If hiking isn’t your thing, then a simple walk on a nearby trail would be ideal to at least get the blood flowing.

Go Swimming

Many indoor pools exist to ensure people can swim all year round. Swimming is an ideal fitness option because it allows everyone to get involved. Even those with weak muscles or arthritis can get in the pool for some exercise. The water is far easier on the joints than anything else.

Shopping Fitness Trip

Shopping is often part of the plan for most people around the holidays. They will have to spend hours at stores finding the right gifts for family. Turning shopping into a fitness trip is an easy way to incorporate exercise into the schedule. Take the stairs instead of an elevator or escalator every time. Participants can also do extra walking by taking bags to the car before returning to do more shopping. It helps keep the back from hurting too, so it’s a win-win.

Take a Fitness Class

Fitness classes exist no matter the time of year. Find a local option and see if its schedule fits with yours. Just one class a week may be all that’s needed to rejuvenate the mind and body and keep it flexible and working well. With so many to choose from, everyone can find something they want to do or even enjoy.

Fitness often gets left behind during the holiday months, as there is far too much to do and not enough time for everything you want to accomplish. By taking a day or several days over the season to go swimming, take a hike, make a fitness trip out of shopping, or take a fitness class, people can get in the exercise they need to keep their blood flowing and energy up.
