What to Expect During a Chiropractic Visit
By Brandi Goodman
Doing something new can seem scary. Going to the chiropractor for the first time is no exception. Knowing what to expect once you arrive can help to ease your anxiety and ensure you're better prepared for the occasion.
Exam
You'll be examined first so the doctor of chiropractic can identify any areas of restriction you may have. He'll want to see the extent of your range of motion. To determine this, you may be asked to perform a few stretches, such as bending and touching your toes, or reaching your arms towards the ceiling. For this reason, it's important that you wear the appropriate clothing to your session. Baggy sweatshirts and business suits won't suffice. Wear something you can move well in.
Discussion
Your symptoms don't always stem from the reason you think. It's important to have a candid discussion with your chiropractic about things going on in your life. If you're sleeping poorly, suffered some sort of trauma, or pulled a muscle working out, he'll need to know about it all. Being truthful about why you're there can help your doctor of chiropractic pinpoint the problem and work to resolve it correctly.
Table Adjustment
A basic table adjustment is typically utilized for most patients. You may be instructed to lay face down on the table or to start on your back. The chiropractor will use gentle manipulation techniques by hand. Some may utilize additional tools, such as a roller or scraper, if necessary. Don't be afraid if you hear cracking and similar noises. It's completely normal. The extent of the adjustment will vary depending on your symptoms and the goals of the session.
Advice
You won't leave your visit without some advice about healthier living. If your back has been in pain, the chiropractor may encourage you to try certain stretches. If your joints have been aching, you may be encouraged to drink more water or eat foods that fight inflammation. Never be afraid to ask for advice, either. If you want to know how to be healthier or prevent pain, ask your chiropractor for some guidance. That's what they're there for.
