Easy Ways to Improve Your Posture at Work

By Sara Butler

There are all kinds of things that find their way onto your work to-do list. Is better posture one of them? It should be! No matter what kind of work you do, your posture matters. If you don't adopt proper posture, then you are making yourself more susceptible to pain and discomfort all over your body. Luckily, there are a few easy things you can do to improve your posture at work.

Sit Up

Channel your inner grandmother and remind yourself to sit up straight. This is one of the easiest things you can do to improve your posture at work. All you need to do is sit tall in your chair, envisioning that your ears are lined up over your shoulders. This can help to reduce the stress and strain placed on your shoulders, back, and neck muscles.

Point Your Chest

Whatever it is you're doing at work, whether it's working on a computer or sitting in a meeting, you must make sure your chest is pointed in the direction that you're looking. Many times, people don't realize that they're slumping over and their chest is actually pointed down at the keyboard or the table in front of them. If you're sitting up straight, then your chest should point toward whatever it is your eyes are focused on.

Don't Cross Your Legs

You may be under the impression that crossing your legs is the appropriate thing to do, but if you want to protect your body and improve your posture, then keep both feet firmly planted on the floor. Simply sitting with your legs uncrossed can help keep your back straight and reduce pressure placed on your hips and lower back, too.

Take Frequent Breaks

It's easy to become so engrossed in what you're doing that you don't even realize how much time has passed, but that's why it's essential that you find some way to remind yourself to take a break at least once every hour. Set an alarm on your phone or computer to help remind you, then get up and move around and stretch a bit before getting back to work. This can help you to maintain better posture and gets you out of a literal slump.
