Decorating for Fall Without Back Pain

By Virginia Laird

I cannot wait until it is time to begin decorating for fall! Like many others, fall is one of my all-time favorite parts of the year. I am not sure if I get more excited about the smell of pumpkin filling my home, or the beauty of the changing landscape. If you are like me and looking forward to dragging out all the fall décor, you may also be thinking ahead to the back pain that can accompany this chore. Chiropractors have offered a few suggestions to help you avoid back pain while making your home ready for fall. Some of these suggestions include:

  • Stretch before doing hard work
  • Lift heavy boxes with your legs
  • Try routine chiropractic care

Stretch Before Doing Hard Work

Although it may seem slightly silly, it can be wise to stretch prior to starting hard work. I know the thought of using the words "hard work" to describe decorating for fall can seem silly. However, most do not lift heavy boxes, climb on ladders, etc., throughout a regular day. These aspects of decorating can make placing all your fall décor hard work. Chiropractors advise it is wise to stretch your legs, arms, neck, and back prior to getting started on any work that your body may not be used to doing.

Lift Heavy Boxes with Your Legs

Another tip chiropractors suggest is to lift all heavy loads with your legs. For many, this may be a new concept. Although lifting with your legs may prove to be a struggle for it to come naturally, it is worth the battle. If you are unsure whether you are lifting with the legs or the back, chiropractors have made it simple:

  • Lifting with the legs - Requires one to bend at the knees
  • Lifting with the back - Requires one to bend at the waist

If you are one who routinely lifts with the back, research suggests you are inviting back pain and, in some cases, injury. Start making the change today to protect your back.

Try Routine Chiropractic Care

While many believe that chiropractic care is only for those who are in pain, this is far from the truth. Research suggests that using chiropractic routinely can prevent back pain and injury. Chiropractors work to keep the spine in an unrestricted position. This is done by using small adjustments.
