Failing to Plan For Disasters May Be the Disaster

By Tom Herrin

When people hear of many of the situations that seem so overwhelming for so many people, they may feel that they are just glad it is somewhere else and not where they are.  The fact is that it can be anywhere.  Seeing some of the major disasters that people have dealt with is daunting.  Knowing that lives are at stake with the decisions people make in these circumstances can make people feel helpless.  So many times, avoidable tragedies occur due to the fact that people fail to anticipate, so they fail to plan.

Plan For the Unexpected

In 2005, the Gulf Coast experienced Hurricane Katrina.  The world watched as so many people were affected.  I went to New Orleans on two different occasions to help with cleaning up.  It was distressing to see.  There were some areas where it was obvious that people had been caught totally by surprise.  Some real planning could possibly have prevented some of this catastrophe.  Being aware that disaster can strike is an important part of devising a good plan.

Something That Can Be Grabbed In Seconds Is Important

People should have some important things that can be carried in their hands in one trip.  A five-gallon bucket can be used to carry bottled water, a small amount of food, first aid supplies, and copies of important information.  In real emergency situations, there is little time to pack.  If people have things that they can easily transport with them, they are much more likely to be in a situation where they can make better decisions.  Basic survival is a necessity.  If people have those things taken care of, they are more likely to keep a level head under stress.

Survival May Be Dependent Upon Anticipation

People have to consider the many possibilities.  Thinking about what could happen is a major part of planning.  We have to realize that we are vulnerable.  We have to know that we cannot control all of the circumstances, but we may be able to manage the effects of them.  Maintaining the best possible health can be a great tool in increasing the chance of survival in a disaster.  We cannot make good decisions under pressure in a volatile situation.  Heeding the warning of trusted sources, combined with our own plans, can help us avoid personal disaster.
