Aging Is Not Just In the Mind, Activity Is Critical

By Tom Herrin

No matter how someone looks at it, aging is a tough thing for most people.  It is often accompanied by a feeling of helplessness; that is, they may feel that they have no control over a situation they see as spiraling out of reach.  Declining health and/or abilities as people age can suddenly leave them depressed with the changes they are experiencing.  Studies have shown that much of this is actually more within their grasp than they realize.  It just takes commitment to maintaining good overall health.

The Body Will Have Natural Changes

For men in particular, as they get much past their 20s, they will have a steady decline in muscle and an increase in weight, body fat, and size in the middle.  This lends itself to increases in blood pressure and decrease in heart efficiency.  Blood is simply not moved as well.  Many times, this may go hand-in-hand with less activity.  It may end up seeming a little like the chicken and egg.  Some of it is going to happen regardless, but much of it may well be due to being less active.

Health Problems Can Be A Result

With the rise in blood pressure, many people have a variety of secondary problems.  Many people become more complacent in their overall level of health concern.  Eating habits and choices tend to worsen.  This weight increase has had a devastating effect on the rise in type 2 diabetes.  This is considered a preventable disease that is almost out of control in its presence among people as they age.

The Ball May Be In Your Court

With all of what may seem to be this bad news, there is a very bright side.  Several studies have shown that people can regain much of the health and abilities they may have lost with an improved plan of activity.  Managing weight and exercise must be a priority.  Eating habits should be planned as well to serve as something to sustain quality of life.  It may a little trouble, but it is well worth it.  I have been fortunate enough to be able to stay focused on these needs myself.  I have learned that both of these elements must be a way of life.  As a result, I weigh the same now that I did 40 years ago.  While a little of my total strength has declined, I am still able to have about a 45-minute workout each day.  So far, so good.  It is worth the effort.
