Is Home Really Where Your Heart Is?
By Tom Herrin
There are a lot of sayings that most people are familiar with. When referring to home, there seems to be some question as to exactly where someone would like to be. If often appears that some people would rather be at work than at home. Working is a great thing, and everyone needs to work in order to feel more productive and successful. Working 52 weeks a year is another thing. If people really care for their family, it is important that they spend some quality time at home with them. If not at home, spending time together somewhere can be one of the best ways to improve health for everyone in that family unit.
It Can Lower Stress
When people have a real beak from the daily grind, they can change their focus. Finding something else to put their efforts into can be refreshing. It can get their minds off of that old routine. This may very well be a contributor to what appears to be a help to the heart. Studies have shown that people who take vacations regularly are less likely to die of a heart attack.
It May Improve Mental Function
It seems that a vacation may reduce depression. That is probably a given to most, but many people still fail to take all of the days they are entitled to take each year. No doubt, many feel they need to save it for a rainy day. A vacation may help to promote positive emotions. It can cultivate feelings of greater happiness that may carry over to the times when people are dealing with the more mundane lifestyle.
It May Improve Relationships
A vacation can create an opportunity to renew the connection between our families. It is always great to spend time with our family members in a setting that is more diverse. Seeing how others in the family react to different situations can be eye opening. We have found some true treasures while on vacation. When we have seen new places and things, we have had the chance to share the experience with each other. Simple family discussions while away from our normal activities has been a real boost for our relationships. We have been able to create fun from some of the simplest activities. Whether it is a road trip, camping trip, or an outing to some nearby attraction, we have benefited from it every time.
