Varied Colors May Yield Good Health

By Tom Herrin

Some people live in a black and white world while others live life in full color.  This may indicate a lot about personality or preference, but it may also indicate opportunities for a little better health.  At least, if these colors are reflected in a meal, they may mean that a person is having a healthy variety.  When it comes to foods, colors may represent foods that can offer lots of benefits for those who choose well.  A general guide is sometimes thought to be that the more colors in a meal, the healthier it is.

Greens Have a Good Reputation

Many people remember a time in which they were told to eat their greens.  It may have been due to the fact that it was one food that they often pushed aside or saved for last in hopes that they could leave them on their plate.  The fact is that greens have a lot to offer.  Some of these foods are believed to be good for bone health.  Others may help to promote sleep.  There are lots of foods that fall into this group.  Beans, peas, kiwi, broccoli, avocado, and several others may be found in this group.

Blues and Purples May Seem Like Miracle Foods

It seems as if a lot of people consider these blue and purple foods as something that can pack a pretty good punch.  That is, many of them are full of antioxidants and other things that can help to fight many other issues such as cancers and inflammation.  Making certain that a diet includes a fair representation of something from this group can be a good way to see that a meal is complete in its purpose.  Some of the obvious foods are blueberries, red grapes, eggplant, plums, etc.  It may serve a valuable purpose to include them early so that kids will appreciate them when they are young.

Develop an Artistic Eye

When we look at a meal as a work of art, it may be easier for us to take in all of its parts.  If we can see that something is missing, we can be better at including it.  It won't take much for us to begin to notice how well the colors set off the meal, and we will know at a glance that it is generally healthy.  It can be a kind of fun game.
