Keep the Light Coming in the Short Days

By Tom Herrin

Most of us don't organize our lives according to available sunlight as we once did.  When we were reliant upon how much sunlight we had and when we had it, people made adjustments based on it.  In today's world, we can pretty much control when we have light and how much we have.  This is good in some respects but others maybe not so much.  Since we no longer depend on sunlight in order to do things, we may tend to fail in getting sufficient amounts of it.  On the health side, we need sunlight every bit as much as ever before.  Too many times, people fail to get enough because of bad practices.

Open the Windows and Be Energized

If you want a good way to wake up, just open the curtains, blinds, or shades and let the sunlight in.  It is one of the best ways to start the day.  This shot of sunlight can be picked up by the eyes and trigger activity in the brain.  This can trigger the release of cortisol that may ramp up the metabolism.  Too many times, older people tend to keep themselves shut in and rob themselves of all of the things the sun can provide.  When the days are shorter, we can do ourselves a big favor by letting the sunshine in or simply going outside.

Kick the Immune System in Gear

Our immune system depends on several things.  Sunlight can help to activate the T cells that play a large part in the system.  Once they shift into high gear, they are better able to help fight off a variety of diseases.  They are believed to have a significant role in combating several cancers including those of the colon, breast, and prostate, all of which are far too common.  The Vitamin D also helps to build bones and manage inflammation.

Make Sunshine a Part of Your Daily Routine

We all need to plan for the next health we can have.  Taking in more sunlight is easy.  It is believed that as little as 15 minutes a day may be enough to provide an adequate amount of sunlight.  For me, it always makes me feel much better anytime I can get sunlight.  It is far better than gray skies and dark rooms.  One of the best things about it is that there is no cost to give it a try.
