The Right Carbs Could Make a Difference

By Tom Herrin

Sometimes it seems as if there is a lot of hype about food.  Many people have some kind of a plan that can be the right fix for whatever problems we may have.  We have seen diets that are high in everything and low in almost everything.  Proteins, fats, and carbs make up what we eat, but the right combination is pretty important.  When it comes to carbs, some people seem to feel they should be cut out as much as possible while others see the need for balance.  A little information can help us to make the best decision for each of us.

Simple Is Not Always Best

Carbs are often referred to as one of two kinds, simple and complex.  While simple may be a great way to go in many things, simple carbs are not necessarily the best kind.  These are those that break down into sugar faster.  At one time, many of us saw this as a sugar high, but a recent study indicated that the so-called sugar high that people get from consuming simple carbs was actually a feeling created by an extreme low that followed a short time after the consumption of the sugar.

Complex Is Not Complicated

The carbs that are considered to be best are called complex.  These carbs break down more slowly.  They may still be divided into groups.  Those that are starches, such as potatoes and white rice, may be a little more difficult to digest.  Diabetics should certainly avoid eating too many of these.  Another kind are those that have large amounts of fiber.  This can help to keep us feeling fuller and aid in digestion.  Finding the foods that can do the most for you is not that difficult, but you will want to evaluate the carbs.

Fruits and Fruit Juices

Many of us drink fruit juice at breakfast.  Some eat a piece of fruit.  Either one has some good vitamins and other nutrients, but they have different amounts, and kinds, of carbs.  Most of the juices have a bit too much sugar, while the whole fruit may have more fiber and less sugar.  We all need some carbs, but it is a good idea to determine just what we are eating or drinking for the benefit of our health.  A piece of fruit may be just what it takes to finish a healthy breakfast.
