Some Carbs Must Remain in a Healthy Diet

By Tom Herrin

It seems that there has been quite a bit of attention given to the notion of cutting carbs out of a diet.  Some of the more extreme diets appear to focus on forcing the body to burn carbs until they are depleted, then burn fats in their place.  The idea may be sound on the surface, but can get a little out of hand due to the fact that some carbs are necessary for the body to have good health.  Knowing which ones to cut can be a big part of maintaining a healthy balance in a good diet.

Keeping Some Carbs Limited May Work

There are a couple of categories for carbs to fall into.  The bad ones are those that show up in so many packaged snacks.  They may be filled with sugar and contribute to cravings.  It is often difficult to avoid wanting more once a person has had one or two.  It has been suggested that women would be best to limit their consumption to 100 calories from these kinds of foods and that men would be well-advised to limit themselves to 150 calories from these.  Exercising some self-discipline with these may be the key to a successful diet.

Go for the Good Carbs

It is fortunate that all carbs are not bad.  Some are very good and definitely necessary for the body to work well.  The body needs them for fuel and maintenance of the muscles.  These can be found in fruits, vegetables, and healthy grains.  When people don't have enough of these, they risk the chance that the body may begin to use muscle for fuel.  This reduces the amount of lean muscle in the body and can create an unhealthy situation.  People who suffer from starvation experience this same thing.

What Can I Do?

The best thing any of us can do is become as informed as possible.  If we learn everything possible about nutrients, we can make better decisions.  We don't have to be experts.  We simply have to be informed.  I am an avid reader of labels.  I have found that I can learn more about the foods I eat and create a productive diet that works for me.  I can also remind myself of what I am trying to compare and avoid.  It can make a difference.  Give it a try.  See for yourself.
