Will Natural Immunity Work Better Than a Vaccine?

By Tom Herrin

As we have all waited with anticipation for the unveiling of vaccines that can help to protect us against the virus that has sickened and killed so many, any news has caused us to perk up.  Now that vaccines have been rolled out, and people have begun to take them, most of us are waiting our turn.  Whether or not we take it may be a different thing.  There has been quite a bit of fear instilled through bad information.  Now may be the best time for us to make every effort to gather as much information as possible so that, when the vaccines are made available to us, we will be ready to make a decision that is best for us and our families.

Vaccines Protect Communities

The idea of offering protection from any kind of illness is not new.  The major epidemics of old struck fear into everyone.  The notion of finding a way to develop immunity to one of these no doubt led to the discovery of a way to make a smallpox vaccine.  At that time, it had been noticed that some people seemed to have immunity to the disease.  The investigation paved the way for the vaccine.  It was crude but pretty effective.  Since that time, many other vaccines have been developed.  The ways in which they work is much more high tech as well.  Today we have successful vaccines for polio, measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus, and many others.  For the most part, we no longer have to live in fear of these diseases.

Vaccines Could Harm Some People

It seems as if every good thing has opposition.  All vaccines have not been great.  Some of the more primitive ones have made people pretty ill.  Some of the general reactions are soreness, muscle weakness, fever, headaches, loss of some senses, and seizures, just to name a few.  Some people are justifiably concerned about taking something that seems a little unproven for the long haul.

Learn All You Can

It is important for each of us to make our own decision about taking a new vaccine.  We must read and study the available facts.  Once we have done this, it is important for us to weigh the options.  Which is the greater risk?  We should take a pretty close look.  The newer vaccines have been developed with some pretty good technology.  I am thinking it may well be worth some careful thought.
