3 Habits That Make Your Back Pain Worse

By Genevieve Cunningham

We all have a million little habits, most of which we don't even notice. We don't notice when we're biting our nails or tapping our fingers on the table. We don't notice our habit of scrolling through every new show on Netflix before settling on one we've seen a million times. Most of our habits are harmless -- just things that we're comfortable doing over and over again. But then there are the habits that hurt us. The ones that literally harm our health. While some of these are obvious (smoking, vaping), the vast majority of these habits sneak up on us. If you'd like to improve our health and feel your best, take a look at these three habits that are probably making your back pain worse, followed by some tips for getting them under control.

Technology Time

Technology makes life easier. It creates more efficiency, and in theory, more time because of it. But in reality, technology is doing way more than just making things easier. It's bleeding us dry. We're spending so much time on technology, it's leading to back and neck pain, headaches, and a decline in mental health. Technology is not the enemy, but double-check the amount of time you're spending in front of a screen and keep it under control.

Lack of Movement

Blame it on technology or laziness or whatever you want, but our lifestyles are way too sedentary. We spend too much time sitting and too little time moving about. This contributes to both tension and discomfort in the back. If you took a good hard look at your daily habits, you'd probably notice that you don't move or engage your body nearly enough. Get moving, and at least some of the discomfort will fall away.

Poor Lifting Habits

Even if we're not lifting something exceptionally heavy (weights, furniture, etc), we lift things all day long. Boxes, bags, children. And most of the time, we don't give form a second thought. But if you're constantly lifting heavy items with poor form, then you're definitely contributing to your own back pain. Focus on lifting with the legs instead of the back and you'll be able to protect the back a little longer.

Heal Your Back With Chiropractic Care

It's natural and noninvasive, which makes it a great choice for your long-term health. Don't wait! Make lifestyle changes, yes, but make sure that you add chiropractic care to the mix to keep yourself as healthy (and pain-free!) as possible.
