Easy Ways to Protect Your Spine

By Sara Butler

Have you ever been roped into helping a friend move, only to strain your back in the process? The American Chiropractic Association says that back injury and pain are very common. In fact, you have an 80 percent chance of experiencing that kind of pain at some point in your life. That's why it's so important that you do a few simple things to ensure the health of your spine. Here are some tips to get you started from the chiropractors at The Joint.

Practice Proper Posture

You've probably heard it a million times over the course of your life: "Stand up straight!" Well, get ready to hear it again because your posture is a really important factor in the health of your spine.

You should focus on sitting and standing with your shoulders back and abdominal muscles engaged throughout the day. Make sure to have a chair that helps to provide proper support for your lower back and keep your head lifted. A good rule of thumb, if you work in front of a computer all day, is to make sure your monitor is at eye level so you don't have to look down.

Stretch It Out

Stretching is also something that should be a part of your daily routine. In fact, regular stretching is a great way to fight against back pain since it helps to relieve the stress and strain placed on your spine by staying in one position for too long. Remember, you can't stretch too much over the course of the day. Set a reminder on your phone or computer to take a break at least once per hour to get up, move around, and do a few stretches.

Sleep Well

Most people don't put a lot of thought into the way they sleep, but if you care about your back, then you should! If your mattress is more than a decade old, then it's time to invest in a new one that offers proper support to your spine as you sleep. You should also utilize pillows to help maintain the neutral alignment of your spine as you sleep. Talk to your chiropractor about how to best support your body based on your sleeping position.
