Bike More for Big Benefits

By Brandi Goodman

Bike Month arrives in May. The spring season is a great time to start riding your bike more often, continuing the habit throughout the summer and even into fall. As long as the weather permits, you should ride your bike regularly throughout the year to experience the many benefits the activity has to offer.

Improving Fitness Abilities

Biking is an excellent fitness option that boosts your abilities. If you're looking to gain muscle strength in your legs, enhance your stamina, or increase your flexibility, riding a bike is a way to do all of that and more. Cycling is an aerobic exercise that burns calories and builds muscle so you can get in a good workout in just a short time.

Reducing Stress Levels

Stress brings on many more problems for most people. You don't just feel stressed for a moment and then it passes. Instead, stress tends to linger, making your mind wander to negative places. You may lose sleep and even feel ill because of it. Exercising is a great way to eliminate stress. Being outdoors is also a way to do so. Combining the outdoors and exercise during a bike ride is a major stress reliever.

Managing Weight

People who are overweight should add exercise into their regular routine so they can manage it. Biking is a great option for weight loss and management because it builds muscle which burns calories. You can burn an average of 350 calories in a 30-minute time-span. Even if you do not lose weight, regular biking will help to keep the same weight steady so you are not gaining.

Disease Prevention

Failing to exercise regularly means you are more at risk for developing certain diseases. Heart disease, diabetes, depression, and stroke are all possible when you are unhealthy. Though some of these diseases are hereditary or have other risk factors, exercise is one one prevention method. Cycling a few times per week can help you lower your risk.

Enjoy a bike ride as often as possible during Bike Month and afterward to gain all the benefits. If you aren't an experienced rider, you may want to stop in at The Joint Chiropractic to have any joint restrictions or subluxations removed that could inhibit your abilities. A pain-free ride is possible with a little help.
