By Virginia Laird
With the cooler weather making an appearance, and seemingly sticking around for a while, many have begun stocking up on all the warm beverages which seem to overtake the mind this time of year. Although these are tasty, most are filled with calories and sugar. A few drinks you may need to avoid this holiday season include:
- Adult beverages are littered with calories
- Hot cocoa and apple cider are full of sugar
- Soda can bloat the body
Adult Beverages are Littered with Calories
As millions attend holiday parties or try to unwind near the warmth of the fire, an adult beverage may be what you have in mind. Although it may sound like a great idea, those who have the desire to put their health first should avoid consuming too many adult beverage. Research suggests that enjoying too many adult beverages can lead to health issues, including issues with the liver and weight gain. Health and wellness experts advise that you should limit yourself to only one adult beverage per day maximum.
Hot Cocoa and Apple Cider are Full of Sugar
Although hot cocoa and apple cider are both delightful beverages to drink during this time of the year, they are both filled with sugar. Research suggests that consuming too much sugar can lead to serious health issues, including diabetes. While just one cup should not put anyone over the edge, it is vital to know the risks of consuming too much. Health and wellness experts recommend those who love these beverages limit themselves to one per week. There are also a variety of sugar-free alternatives which can satisfy the craving for these beverages without adding the unnecessary sugar.
Soda Can Bloat the Body
While soda may not be considered a holiday beverage, many find themselves consuming more this time of year as they make the party rounds. Health and wellness experts advise that soda can bloat the body which can lead to pain and discomfort in the abdomen. Research suggests that not only does soda bloat the body, it too is full of sugar as well as harmful chemicals which can hamper the function of the metabolism, among other things.
Research has long suggested that water is the best beverage to rely on for your health and wellness. It is advised that you should consume at least half of your body weight in ounces each day. Start making it a priority to drink plenty of water now.
When you head out to your holiday party, or settle in by the fire, plan to keep your consumption of these beverages to a minimum as you plan to manage your weight and health. Happy holidays!
