3 Easy Ways to Cool Down in a Summer Workout

By Genevieve Cunningham

The heat can be dangerous. Even if you're used to warm summers and bright sunny days, it doesn't take much to get overheated. And if you're working out in the great outdoors, the danger is even greater. Luckily, that doesn't mean that you have to stop exercising outside. You just need a plan of action. You need multiple options for cooling down and keeping safety first. If you need some ideas for staying cool and safe during your outdoor workouts, take a look at these three easy tips to keep in mind starting today.

Always Find the Shade

If you plan on working out outdoors, you'll need to make sure that shade is nearby. If you can work out in the shade, do that! But if not, you'll need a cool down spot somewhere close. The temperature can be many degrees cooler in the shade, so any time you're feeling overheated, you can simply head over to the shade for a few minutes. In hot weather, shade is your friend. And in a hot workout, shade is an absolute necessity.

Always Stay Hydrated

Water is necessary for any workout. In fact, it's necessary for life. And when you're working out outside, it's something that you really can't do without. Water will keep you hydrated and help keep your temperature down. If you're not drinking water, you'll get too hot, to dry, and potentially suffer things such as headaches and leg cramps. If you think you have enough water, take a little more. Staying hydrated is an important step in any exercise routine -- whether you're inside or out.

Always Measure Intensity

You're really the only one who knows how hard your body can work. How much you can take. How intensely you can work out safely. You have to constantly listen to your body and measure your intensity. If it's getting to be too much, back off a little. If you can go harder, do it. Knowing the limits of your own body will help you maintain a healthy heart beat, avoid over tiring the muscles, and keep your body temperature at an acceptable and safe temperature.

Working out outside can be a great idea. It changes the pace and feels good. It can even improve your mood and outlook. But it's definitely important to stay safe. Use these tips to keep your outdoor workout as healthy as possible, and enjoy the change in routine and health that may come along with it.
