5 Key Components of a Healthy Summer

By Brandi Goodman

The summer season is a healthier one for many people. The sun is out and shining. You're getting more exercise. You're able to get outdoors more and not stuck inside. It's a good time for most. But without the key components of a healthy summer, your well-being may not be as good as you'd think.

Water

Water is essential for summer. When you're outdoors often and sweating in the heat, you can get dehydrated much more quickly than usual. You need to stay hydrated if you hope to maintain your body's water levels and keep yourself feeling well. A lack of water can make you feel sick, dizzy, and unlike yourself.

Sunscreen

The summer sun beats down hard on many days. Even when it isn't shining, the sun is often there behind the clouds emitting harmful rays that can do damage to your skin. You need to wear sunscreen anytime you're outside so you can stay protected. It can prevent sunburn and the potential for skin cancer.

Sunglasses

Just as your skin needs to be protected from the sun, so do your eyes. You should wear your sunglasses anytime you're outdoors -- especially on extra sunny days. Never look directly at the sun, even with sunglasses on. Damaging UV rays can penetrate the lenses and cause harm to your eyesight. The effects may not be felt now, but they will as you age.

Exercise

Not everyone gets out and about in the summer. Maybe you're stuck at work seven days per week and can't get outside the way you'd like. It's important to at least try to find a small interval of time in your day to get some exercise. Exercise is necessary for good health. You need to keep your muscles and joints strong to prevent injuries and aches.

Nutritious Foods

You can't go around the whole summer eating fried fair foods, fast food meals, ice cream, and other junk. You need nutritious options if you hope to maintain your well-being. Fattening foods packed with calories can cause weight gain and leave you feeling fatigued and sluggish. Nutritious foods will give you the energy you need to tackle your summer to-do list.

Make your summer the healthiest yet by including these key components. You need to maintain your health and well-being all season long so you have the energy and stamina to make it through your summer schedule -- whatever that entails.
