3 Reasons to Avoid the Tanning Bed

By Virginia Laird

While the idea of tanning seems to be a wonderful thing for many, dermatologists suggest that there are no benefits to utilizing this form of achieving a tan. Research has long indicated that tanning can speed up the aging process of the skin, and much more. Still, millions turn to the use of tanning beds to get a lovely tan. Experts suggest that before you pay your membership at the tanning salon, that you educate yourself of the harms which can come as a result of tanning. These include:

  • Tanning can put your health at risk
  • Tanning is not the best way to get Vitamin D
  • Tanning causes cancer

Tanning Can Put Your Health at Risk

Dermatologists insist that tanning in a tanning bed can put your health at risk. Although the warmth of the lights that surround your body can be relaxing, and at times stress relieving, this habit does increase your chances of developing skin cancer. Furthermore, there is research to suggest that tanning compromises the immune system. Rather than putting your health at risk, consider achieving your ultimate tan with an alternative method.

Tanning is Not the Best Way to Get Vitamin D

Although those who work at tanning salons would have you believe that laying under the UV lights can get you Vitamin D, this is not the case. Most of the tanning beds do not use the appropriate UV lights which provides it. It is also wise to know that spending as little as 10 minutes outside each day can provide the amount of Vitamin D needed to stay healthy. Before you begin your tanning habit make sure you educate yourself.

Tanning Causes Cancer

Tanning causes cancer. Research indicates that it simply does not matter whether you tan in a tanning bed or lay outside day after day, tanning can lead to cancer. However, it is important to know that tanning in a tanning bed increases the chances of developing skin cancer more so than laying outside. Research indicates that those who indulge in a tanning bed lifestyle routinely increase their chances of developing melanoma by 50 percent. This has much to do with the concentrated UV light that is so close to the skin. Before you allow yourself to become a victim of skin cancer, take note of the risks prior to making the commitment to tan.

Start today preventing these effects from taking over your life by choosing an alternative to the tanning bed.
