Embracing Activity and Exercise

By Stephen R. Farris

When trying to lose or maintain weight, we should also add exercise to the list to help keep those extra pounds off or drop a few more. Let's take a look at a few ways we can incorporate more exercise into our weight loss regimen and to maintain it once we've reached our goal.

Do It All

Not sure where to start exercising. Don't be afraid, jump right in and try them all from aerobic exercise, weight training and aquatic exercise. They can all help burn calories and help build strength and mobility.

Don't Make It Hard on Yourself

It's real easy to jump right into exercise and try to go full blast. But if you're not used to it, you'll soon start skipping your routine quicker than you think. The best advice is to start off slow, especially if you've never done certain exercises. Once you get the basics of whatever it is you're doing, you can gradually progress to another level until you've mastered it, then move on to the next. Plus it gives you something to look forward to and a sense of accomplishment and confidence.

Make Sure You're Healthy Enough and Ready

If you are suffering from a health condition, it's always best to consult with your physician or chiropractor to see if you've ready to begin an exercise routine, especially if you are at a higher risk for heart disease, diabetes or obese. People over the age of 50 should do this first anyway.

Do What You Love

There's nothing more disheartening than doing exercises that you dislike. Why suffer? There are plenty of exercise regimes out there to choose from and at least one of them you'll find enjoyment and fulfillment from. If you enjoy walking, then walk. Like to run, then jog. Swim laps if you're into water activities. Just find something you love to do that will give you the health benefits to maintain and/or drop some weight.

Stay Active During the Day

Even if you are working out, stay active during the course of your day. If at work, try walking around during breaks and lunch. You can even do a few exercises at your desk in between phone calls and emails. At home, clean the house, do laundry, yard work, anything to stay busy between workouts.
