What You Need to Know About Exercising

By Ashley Chapman

Many work out for the benefits of weight loss.

Maintaining a healthy weight is beneficial to your bones and joints. However, exercise can bring other important factors to your overall health. Regardless of age, it is vital that you are active in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, which includes both exercise and eating.

Here's what you need to know about exercising.

How Often Should You Work Out?

Exercise is important, but how often you work out is based on each individual person and goals. If you are just starting to create a workout schedule, it is important to start slow. One or two times a week would be a good start, and going on walks during lunch breaks is a great way to begin an active lifestyle.

As you become more comfortable, you can adjust your activities and length of time based on what you want to achieve.

Different Types of Exercise Yield Different Results

Once you have started working up slowly to exercise, it is important to know what your goals are.  One type of exercise could keep you active but with low impact. These types of exercises include speed walking, water aerobics or bicycle rides; all are great options.

However, if you are looking to improve your strength, then you might benefit from strength training. When you think of strength training, it does not necessarily mean lifting weights. Various styles of exercise not only focus on strength training, but also core strength. These types of exercises include Pilates, yoga and rowing.

Participating in cardio exercises helps with improving your overall strength, breathing, and can help burn fat, faster. Types of cardio include running (indoor or outdoor), swimming and cycling.

What If You Are Injured?

Some people may stray from exercise because of an injury that they have endured. You can participate without further injuring yourself in many different exercises.

Talking to your healthcare provider is a good start; they will know your injury the best. However, know that some forms of low impact exercising includes water aerobics, swimming, kayaking, walking (no treadmills) and the elliptical.

Eating Habits

To get the full effect of your workouts, it is best to follow healthy eating habits. Following a balanced diet includes protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats. This also includes trying to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner. This can be hard, depending on your work and life schedule, so preparing snacks for when you are between meals can help with binge eating unhealthy foods (such as chips, fries and candy).
