How to Manage Daily Anxiety

By Genevieve Cunningham

Anxiety is no laughing matter. More people than ever before are suffering from this condition. Kids, adults, the elderly -- it's a rampant and growing problem. For some people, the only answer is medication. They need something to literally calm the chemicals in the brain. But other people may not actually need medication; they just need some coping mechanisms to get them through the day. So how do we manage anxiety? What can we do to keep it under control on a daily basis? If you need a little help with constant anxious feelings, take a look at these tips for daily management of your condition.

Speak With a Professional for a Plan

Even if you don't need medication, it can help to speak with a professional to learn coping techniques and come up with a plan. They may suggest a certain routine or certain mantras to help you get through the day. Once you have a plan, it's easier to stick with it. You can ask your healthcare provider for a recommendation, or you can go straight to a mental healthcare professional if you so desire. Just get some help to get moving in the right direction.

Create and Follow Routines

Anxiety tends to be worse when we don't have routines. When we don't know what to expect. To lower the anxiety, create and stick with routines throughout your day. Good places to begin are first thing in the morning and last thing before bed. But you can create routines around any part of your day. This routine can provide comfort and can really lower your stress when you feel out of control and overwhelmed.

Have an Emergency Plan

Anyone with anxiety knows that there will be moments that are completely overwhelming. While you can't avoid these situations, you can be prepared. Come up with an emergency plan for those moments in your life. Whether you stop what you're doing and meditate, call a particular person to talk you through it, or go for a run, having a plan will make it easier. Even if you never have to use it, just having an emergency plan at the ready can lower your anxiety and make you feel a bit less out of control.

Anxiety is hard to deal with. It's not fun. It's stressful. And it's a serious problem for a lot of people! Luckily, there are so many ways that we can keep our anxiety under control, or at the very least, learn how to manage it. Use these tips to get started, and enjoy more of your life without frustrating anxiety plaguing your every move.
