6 Keys to Making Healthy Habits Last

Getting fit and healthy always sounds easy. I’ll just give up sodas or candy. That’ll work! Unfortunately, it’s generally a bit more difficult than that. Many times we start the process of a healthy life only to give up a few weeks later. If you’re ready to get healthy and stay that way, check out these six key steps to making healthy habits stick.

Start Small

If you jump and decide to change everything about your life all at once, you’re setting yourself up for ultimate failure. You’re incredibly unlikely to stick with too much change at one time. Instead, just change one small aspect of your life. Once you get used to it, add another. Never forget that slow and steady wins the race.

Give Up Bad Habits

Even though adding new healthy habits is absolutely crucial for long-term fitness success, you still have to give up the old bad habits as well. Do you love ice cream before bed? You’re probably going to have to limit it. Do you smoke or use tobacco? Stopping is inevitable. Every time you add a new healthy habit, give up an old one. Out with the old, in with the new, and your healthy body will be here in no time.

Allow for Messing Up

Guess what? You’re totally going to fail some days. Sometimes you’ll binge on cupcakes all day. Some days you’ll skip your workout in lieu of Netflix. It happens. Allow it. Just make sure that you get back on your game as soon as you can and keep going. 

Patience is Key

You are absolutely not going to change overnight. Give it time … and lots of it! It’s been a week and you can’t see your six pack? Yeah … no kidding! Give it six weeks, and then six months, and then a year. Your body will change, but you have to be patient with the process. 

Consistency Matters

That one awesome workout that you did today won’t mean anything if you’re not being consistent. Your diet and exercise routine have to be constant. They have to be a part of your lifestyle if you really want them to work. Go ahead and try something new and exciting from time to time, but don’t rely on that one workout or that one salad to get the job done.

You’ll Never be Perfect

Don’t ever forget that perfection isn’t real. Do you know how much makeup and Photoshop is used on models? A lot! Go easy on yourself. Strive for greatness, but don’t be discouraged when your body isn’t absolutely perfect. It’s never going to be, and that’s really OK.

If you’re on the road to better health, don’t give up! Even though it can be difficult, the journey and the end result will be more than worth it. Just add these six essential keys to your mindset and your life, and get healthy now.
