Chiropractic Care Can Help You Avoid Narcotics

By Randi Morse

You don't have to watch the news every day to know that we have a serious opioid epidemic in the United States. If you're like me, you may wonder how our country became one that is obsessed with opioids and narcotics. It turns out, many of the people who become addicted to narcotics and opioids begin their addiction with a prescription drug. At one point or another they were prescribed narcotics in order to help deal with significant pain. Because opioids and narcotics are so addictive, it doesn't take a great stretch of the imagination to understand how so many people have become addicted to these chemicals.

Chronic Pain

It is most common for patients who have chronic pain to be prescribed extremely powerful drugs. Chronic pain can be devastatingly debilitating, causing not only severe ongoing pain, but also severe mental health problems as well. People who are struggling with chronic spinal pain may be able to avoid taking any sort of powerful narcotics thanks to the help of chiropractic care.

Chiropractic Studies

Recently, researchers decided to look at a number of small studies in order to determine if chiropractic care is a viable solution for somebody struggling with chronic back pain. The study followed just over 62,000 participants who all presented with chronic spinal pain. Between these six studies anywhere from 11 to 51 percent of the participants chose to use chiropractic care over prescription drugs. The results of the study were astounding. Researchers reported in the Journal of Pain Medicine that the participants in the studies who chose to use chiropractic treatment were 64 percent less likely to use opioids than those participants who did not seek out chiropractic care.

The studies found that patients who had recurring spinal pain found relief from a variety of different types of therapies including spinal manipulation, acupuncture, massage, and exercises. They also found that the therapies led to decreased pain and improved range of motion and function.
