A Companion May Boost Health
By Tom Herrin
Those of us who may live alone often become adjusted to it. As a matter of fact, we may enjoy the lifestyle. At times, it may be due to the fact that we really like the quiet. For some, it may be by choice, for others, it may be by circumstance. Living alone may not mean being alone all of the time, but we may have a spouse or roommate who is away for work a lot of the time. Whichever is the case, many people who don't have full-time roommates may find themselves much better off when they have pets. It seems that having a pet may actually be good for our health.
Pets May Help Our Chemistry
Our bodies work best when they have all of the necessary chemicals in place and in the right amount. Cortisol is a hormone that is related to stress. We may have it as a defense mechanism so that we can react accordingly when we are in threatening situations. It can be harmful to many of us as our stress levels increase. Having a pet is believed to help lower the level of this in our bodies. On the other hand, oxytocin is a hormone that can make us feel good. Having a pet, and interacting with it, is believed to increase the levels of this.
Take a Little Walk
It is hard for some of us to make ourselves get into a routine of moderate exercise. When we have a pet, most of them need to do some walking. They look forward to it. As we begin to walk with our pet, it can become a little contagious. We may be more motivated once we experience the activity. Taking that 30-minute walk with a pet can be a sure way to become involved in more physical activity. Playing with that pet can be an added bonus.
Someone Is Waiting for You
When you have a pet, you can be sure that they are waiting for you to get home each day. They are usually happy to see you. This in itself can be a lift. Taking care of something or someone can also be a boost for health. Routine is another thing that can easily be missing when you are alone. If you want to do something enjoyable for your health, try getting a pet.
