Keeping Your Holiday Races Safe

By Donna Stark

As the holidays reach full stride, many of us will attempt to perfect our very own by participating in some form of race. From 5Ks to family traditions to local marathons, the holidays just don't feel complete unless someone is jogging by in a Santa suit. But no matter what type of race you become involved with, it is always best to take the necessary precautions. Take a look at a few of the simple things you can do to better prepare yourself and your family for what lies ahead!

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

If you and your loved ones have spent countless hours preparing for the race, the last thing you would want is for someone to end up dehydrated on the day of the event. The best way to hydrate is to drink the recommended amount of water every day and to combine water and a sports drink in a 2:1 ratio on the day of the race. While strictly consuming water will get the job done, incorporating electrolytes for the race will maximize your efforts.

Fuel Your Body

Your body will undergo a lot of stress during the race, and just as in any other intense sport, your body will not make it far without the right fuel. Consider eating a large meal the day before your race. While planning your meal you should always incorporate important nutrients, such as healthy fats, lean proteins, and complex carbohydrates. Healthy fats, like an avocado, will ensure your body is absorbing all the vital nutrients in your meal. Lean proteins, like chicken and fish, are necessary for your muscles to have enough fuel to push you through the race. And complex carbohydrates help provide the energy your body needs over a long period of time.

Let Your Body Rest

Just as your mind will feel groggy after only getting a few hours of sleep, your body will surely feel the same. For optimal performance, try to get at least a minimum of seven hours of sleep during the nights before your race. For best results, find a way to develop a consistent sleep schedule a couple of weeks in advance. You can do this by keeping your room cool, dark, and quiet, and by turning off all electronic devices at least an hour before bed. The goal here is to go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day.

Racing Your Heart Out

Are you ready to join that jogging Santa and race your heart out? Whether you are trying to beat your best or just want to hang out with friends and family, the tips above will certainly help perfect your stride. Have fun!
