Want a Healthy Spine? Drink Water!

By Donna Stark

From the moment you began your education, you have learned that your body is mostly made up of water, and that water is essential for nutrient absorption, digestion, and detoxification. But those aren't the only reasons why you need to stay adequately hydrated every day. Your spine requires its fair share of water too! If you aren't consuming enough water throughout your days, you could be setting yourself up for some serious spine-related issues down the road.

The Spine Relies on Water

The spine holds many important roles when it comes to your overall health and wellness. While providing structure and support for the body, it also is the communication highway for all the messages sent between the brain and the nervous system. Improper spinal care caused by dehydration can limit your body's function while also causing your spine to age prematurely. But how exactly does a lack of water do that? Great question! Keep reading to learn more.

Dehydration and Its Effect on the Spine

The spine is made of individual vertebrae that are connected by fluid-filled discs. These discs cushion each vertebra and prevent the bones from rubbing together. This fluid also serves as a shock absorber for our spines. Each disc is made of two parts -- a fluid-filled center and a tough outer shell that encapsulates the disc. If enough water is not present in the body, this outer ring cannot cushion the disc properly, and that allows the vertebrae to collide and rub together. This sensation can be very painful, and can often cause other, more serious issues.

The reason why you need to stay consistent with your water consumption is because basic movements, such as walking and sitting, can cause the vertebrae to squeeze down on the discs. This puts the discs under high amounts of pressure, and they begin to leak water. If this water is not replaced, you could find yourself in some serious discomfort. However, by staying on top of your water consumption, you can avoid that from happening.

Does it Have to Be Water?

Although things like tea and soda are fluids, they introduce far too many sugars and chemicals into the body and little to no nutrition. If plain water isn't something you look forward to, there are many things you can add to boost its appeal, such as lemon, berries, cucumber, and mint leaves.

Water for a Healthy Spine

No matter what you do during the day, make sure your water consumption is high on your priority list. Your spine, and the rest of your body, are counting on you to do so!
